MSN/Hotmail on Blacklist

Date: 1/14/2013 – Email from the domains of msn.com and hotmail.com are not coming through currently because of ongoing spam campaigns.  The mail servers responsible for the domains are listed on both the popular SORBS and SPAMCOP blacklists as well as some others.  We currently use SORBS as part of our email filtering, and this results in the messages being rejected.  Technicians working for Hotmail/MSN are aware of the issue and are working to correct it.

Java Recommendations

Date: 1-14-2013 – We have had several customers ask about our thoughts regarding Homeland Security’s recommendation to disable or uninstall Java.

In case you are not sure what Java is, it is a programming language that is designed to run on different operating systems (this is called “cross platform”).  Java can run on anything from a Windows PC, to Mac OSX, to a tablet or cell phone.  Because of this, we use Java in our iFoye technology which allows us to remotely support customers running virtually any operating system.  It is possible to disable Java in your browser so you will not have the security issues brought up by Homeland Security and then re-enable it if you need a support session from us through iFoye.

Homeland Security seems to think there is no “practical solution” to the problem.  However Oracle (the makers of Java) have released a new update which addresses the concerns made by the government.  We recommend that everyone running Java immediately run that update.   However, if you are uncomfortable with keeping Java live, just follow the instructions to disable Java in your browser.  We recommend running the update even if you disable Java.

Planned Maintenance

December 21, 2012 – AT&T Network Engineers will be performing a planned maintenance on Birmingham-Alabama Gigabit Access Router 1. The work will be performed on 1/15/2013, during the maintenance window of 12:00AM-6:00AM, local router time. AT&T’s goal is to successfully complete the task and restore service within the stated time frame.

AT&T Network Engineers will be performing an IOS upgrade.

Due to the redundant nature of our network, very limited service interruption is expected although some increased latency may be experienced as the routes adjust when the AT&T circuit drops.

Update: 1/14/2013 – This maintenance has been canceled. We will notify users when it is rescheduled.

If there are any questions or concerns regarding this maintenance, please email support@internetpro.net or call 256-547-6817.

WordPress Updates

Monday December 17, 2012 – As part of our full service hosting, we will be upgrading WordPress-based sites on our servers to the new 3.5 version which was released a few days ago.  We wanted to wait a few days to make sure there were no critical bugs.   During the upgrade process, the sites will go into “maintenance mode” and the site will be unavailable.  The maintenance mode usually lasts less than 30 seconds as the upgrade is applied.   We will check to make sure the site seems to be working once the upgrade is complete, but we do recommend that users thoroughly check over their sites to make sure the upgrade did not cause any issues.  We will post an update here when we have completed the upgrade on all sites.

Update: Wednesday December, 19, 2012 – All updates to WordPress sites have been completed.  Again, please check your site functionality – especially plugins.  If there is a problem, please let us know by calling 256-547-6817 or emailing support@internetpro.net.

End of Dial-Up Internet Service

We regret to inform our customers that we are going to discontinue providing dial-up internet services. The time has come where the technology is too outdated to be useful and as a result very few customers are still using it making it no longer feasible for us to provide the service.

The dial-up service will terminate on December 31, 2012. If you have pre-paid for service beyond December, we will be issuing a refund to you.

If you are currently using your internetpro.net (or other email) that is hosted with us, you CAN continue to use that address even after dial-up service stops. We charge $24 per year for the address, and it will work with any internet provider you decide to change to (DSL, Cable, cellular, etc.). Please let us know if you wish to continue the use of your email address so we can adjust your account accordingly.

Thank you for your business, and we do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please contact us at 256-547-6817 or support@internetpro.net if you have any questions.

Maxhub Fire

November 15, 2012 – We’ve been informed that a local computer store and competitor (Max Hub, Inc.) has had a fire at their location.  Although we don’t have many details, it seems that all of their web sites are down as well as email and other services.  Since this is a local company, many of our customers may have contacts using MaxHub’s email services.  We wanted to let our customers know that this is an issue on their end and the resolution will have to wait on MaxHub to get their services back up and running.  Customers emailing addresses hosted with MaxHub will get a notification after 4 hours that the email has not yet gone through.  Our system will keep attempting to deliver the email for 5 days after which a bounce message will be sent back to the sender.

Update: Novemeber 16, 2012 – We were able to contact the owner of MaxHub and have been informed that their email server should be up and running this afternoon, so mail should flow after that.   They did have backups of their sites and configurations.  A small news story about the fire has been posted here: http://www.tv24.tv/news/?newsID=13725

We wish them well in their efforts to restore service to their customers and rebuild their business!
