NetSol Cloud Desktop Client Updated

November 7, 2014 – We are pleased to announce a new release for the desktop sync client for NetSol Cloud.   This is a major release that brings a lot of new features.  First, it better supports the features introduced in our last major update of NetSol Cloud including the new file sharing.  The new client also now comes with overlay icons in the popular file managers on the supported platforms.  The icons visualize the sync and sharing status of the synced files on the desktop.

Another huge new feature of the new client is the “selective sync”.   Now, within a synced folder, subfolders can be excluded from the client synchronization.  For example, if you sync “My Documents” but have a subfolder inside  My Documents that you don’t want to sync, you can now do t hat.   This makes syncing of large data sets much easier to customize.

This release also brings several smaller improvements which make syncing faster and more reliable.

We do recommend that you upgrade to the new version which you can find on our Desktop Sync Client Page.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this new release, please contact us at support@internetpro.net.

NetSol Cloud Updates

As part of our planned maintenace, we will be upgrading the NetSol Cloud.   This is a major version upgrade and includes MANY enhancements.   Some of the improvements follow:

  • Improved user interface and faster responses including mobile support
  • Lazy Loading Files – Files are now loaded using “lazy loading,” which loads the files as you scroll down the page, making the interface more responsive and faster.
  • File Sorting – Files can now be sorted in the web interface by name, size and last modified date – making it easier to manage and find the right file quickly.
  • New configuration options for email notifications
  • For customers who manage their own NetSol Cloud, you will see improved User Management with easier group handling, search, filtering by group and a single, scrolling list putting all users at your finger tips.
  • File Notifications – It is now possible to select and be notified of file activities (including shared, created, changed or deleted files or folders) in the activity stream or in an email digest at a configurable interval.
  • Documents with Word Conversion – The latest NetSol Cloud Documents release includes the ability to convert Word documents on the fly for online editing. Convert a Word document online automatically, edit it live with other users in the browser, and close it again – it will convert back to Word, synced back to your desktop, with the changes embedded.
  • Users can now move files shared with them around in their NetSol Cloud folder structure — no longer required to have a “Shared” folder in their files list. If a user wishes to have a shared folder, they can simply create one and move all of the shared folders and files into this shared directory. If users are upgrading, they can continue to use the Shared folder they already have – it is up to the user.
  • In the files view on the web browser users can now click “files shared with me, files I shared, files shared with link,” providing a filter for the files view that lists only those files and folders that meet that criteria.
  • A file owner’s name is now displayed on the file browser when a file is shared, so users can quickly see who has shared a file or folder with them.
  • Many other new features and enhancements!

We will be rolling out this release over August 8th and 9th, 2014.   If you have any questions or problems with the new release, please contact our support at 256-547-6817 or email support@internetpro.net.

NetSol Cloud Desktop Client Updated

The NetSol Cloud desktop sync client has been updated.   The new updates brings lots or needed changes, the largest of which is parallel downloads.  This means that the client can download (or upload) multiple files at the same time, thereby increasing the speed of the synchronization.  Also included are numerous fixes.  We strongly recommend that everyone update to this new version.   A list of the most important changes follows:

  • Avoid data loss when a client file system is not case sensitive
  • Mac OS X: Support Notification Center in OS X 10.8+
  • Mac OS X: Use native settings dialog
  • Mac OS X: Fix UI inconsistencies on Mavericks
  • Added advanced logging of operations
  • Speed up file stat code on Windows
  • Fix incorrect folder pause state after start
  • Fix a couple of actual potential crashes
  • Improve Cookie support (e.g. for cookie-based load-balancers)
  • Introduce a general timeout of 300s for network operations
  • Improve error handling, blacklisting
  • Job-based change propagation, enables faster parallel up/downloads (right now only if no bandwidth limit is set and no proxy is used)
  • Significantly reduced CPU load when checking for local and remote changes
  • Fix reconnect after server disconnect
  • Fix “unknown action” display in Activity window
  • Fix memory leaks
  • Fix crash in FolderWizard when going offline
  • Fix ‘precondition failed’ bug with broken upload
  • Fix openSSL problems for windows deployment

We hope you enjoy this new version.  If you experience any issues or have any questions, please contact us at 256-547-6817 or email support@internetpro.net.

NetSol Cloud Desktop Client Updated

The desktop sync client for NetSol Cloud has been updated.  If you already had the latest client, you probably already know this as the client would have alerted you to the available update.  The update mechanism in this new version is improved and will do future updates automatically (depending on OS version).   See below for more details and for information on other changes:

  • [Feature] Provide information about the current connection’s encryption and SSL certificate chain in the account dialog
  • Handle Windows LNK files correctly  (these are shortcut icons)
  • Detect remove and renames in read only shared and restore removed files there
  • Preserve permissions of local files
  • Apply network limit changes to active sync run
  • Several bugfixes

For the autoupdater in the new version, see below for descriptions of the feature as pertaining to your operating system:

Windows

ownCloud client will check for updates and download the update if one is available. You can view the status under Settings -> General -> Updates. If an update is available and has been successfully downloaded, ownCloud Client will start a silent update prior to its next launch and then start itself. If the silent update fails, the client offers a manual download.

The user needs to be able to attain administrative privileges to successfully perform the update.

Mac OS X

If a new update is available, ownCloud client will ask the user to update to the latest version using a pop-up dialog. This is the default for Mac OS X applications which use the Sparkle framework.

Linux

Since distributions provide their own update tool, ownCloud Client on Linux will not perform any updates on its own. It will, however, check for the latest version and passively notify the user (Settings -> General -> Updates) if an update is available.

Preventing Auto Updates

In controlled environment such as companies or universities, the auto-update mechanism might not be desired as it interferes with controlled deployment tools and policies. In this case, it is possible to disable the auto-updater entirely:

Windows

There are two alternative approaches:

  1. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ownCloud\ownCloud, add a key skipUpdateCheck (of type DWORD) with the value 1 to the machine. This key can be manually overrideen by the same value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  2. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\ownCloud\ownCloud, add a key skipUpdateCheck (of type DWORD) with the value 1 to the machine. Setting the value here cannot be overridden by the user and is the preferred way to control the updater behavior via Group Policies.

Mac OS X

You can disable the update check via a system-wide .plist file located at /Library/Preferences/com.owncloud.desktopclient.plist. Add a new root level item of type bool and the name skipUpdateCheck and set it to true. You can also just copy the file owncloud.app/Contents/Resources/deny_autoupdate_com.owncloud.desktopclient.plist` to /Library/Preferences/com.owncloud.desktopclient.plist.

Linux

Since there is no updating functionality, there is no need to remove the check. If you want to disable the check nontheless, open a file called /etc/ownCloud/ownCloud.conf and add the following content:

[General]
skipUpdateCheck=true

Mapping NetSol Cloud on Windows 7 or 8

Frequently, people want to access their cloud storage through a mapped drive letter just like they might do a server drive on a local network.  This tutorial will help guide you on mapping a drive letter in Windows 7 and 8 (also 8.1).

There are some limitations with the WebDAV support in Windows, so it is a bit of a chore to make this work.  Once it does, however, you should be set for good.  If you have trouble, please contact us at support@internetpro.net so our technicians can give you help.

1.) Download and install the Microsoft update KB90730 – Web Folders: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=15123

2.) Modify the Windows registry, this will enable Windows to accept basic authentication for SSL and non-SSL shares.
We have provided a registry key HERE which will do this automatically for you. (Just download and run that key) Or, you can do it manually following these instructions (skip to step 3 if you use our automatic key)

2a) Start > Search > Type: regedit > Select regedit
2b) The registry key of interest to find is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters
2c) Select BasicAuthLevel (if it does not exist, create the key)
2d) Change the value to 2.  Select OK > File > Exit

3) Reboot Windows

4) Map the WebDav folder as a network drive  (Note: This procedure sometimes does not work. If it fails, proceed to step 5)
4a) Using Windows Explorer Select  Computer > Select Map Network Drive.
4b) Choose the drive letter you would like to map
4c) In the Folder blank, use https://cloud.internetpro.net/netsol/remote.php/webdav
4d) Place a check mark next to “Reconnect at logon” and “Connect using different credentials” and hit Finish.  If it maps, you should be good to go and you can stop here.

5) If step 4 did not work, follow these instructions to create a batch file to map the drive for you.
5a) Download the batch file HERE.  Save the file.
5b) Edit the batch file by right clicking the file and choosing Edit.
5c) Change “N:” to whatever drive letter you want to use.  Replace “username” with your NetSol Cloud username and “password” with your NetSol Cloud password
5d) Save and exit the file.
5e) To test the file, double click on it.  The drive letter should map correctly.  Click on Start > Computer to verify a mapped drive is present.
5f) Now, right click the file and choose Cut.
5g) Click Start > All Programs.
5h) Right Click on Startup and choose Open  (not Open All Users)
5i) A new window will open.  Right click inside that window and choose Paste.  The netsolcloud.bat file should be placed in that window.

6) Reboot windows and confirm that your mapped drive is still present.
NOTE:  We have seen cases where antivirus and/or antispyware software prevents batch files from running on startup.  If this is the case, you may have to contact your antivirus vendor to find out how to add an exception.  Alternatively, you can leave the netsolcloud.bat file on your desktop and click it manually when logging in to reconnect your mapped drive to NetSol Cloud.

NetSol Cloud Updates

We’ve update the NetSol Cloud with some major fixes.   This release includes the following changes:

  • Collaborative editing of documents
  • User management interface fixes
  • Performance improved significantly over older versions
  • Overall file-handling is faster and more optimized
  • Allow numeric group names
  • Improved IE compatibiliy
  • Sharing permission interface fixes
  • Small visual fixes
  • File scanner fixes to handle deleted files correctly
  • User avatars
  • Better file conflict handling
  • File previews

The collaborative editing is an especially important development.  The documents can be created from within the web-interface or existing documents can be uploaded. Sharing and editing can be done securely in the browser and be shared inside NetSol Cloud or via a public link. Users that have an account on the same server can be invited or public invitations can also be sent be email. The editing works on top of normal ODF files that are stored in NetSol Cloud.  ODF documents are Open Document Format which can also be edited by programs such as OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or Microsoft Word.   This editing is done in real-time so your changes can be seen by the other party AS THEY HAPPEN.

We’ve also posted an update to the NetSol Cloud Sync Clients.   You can find the new clients on our Sync Clients Page. Changes for the client program include:

  • Fixed error display in settings/status dialog, displays multi line error messages now correctly.
  • Wait up to 30 secs before complaining about missing systray
  • Fixed utf8 issues with basic auth authentication
  • Fixed remote folder selector, avoid recursive syncing
  • Handle and display network problems at startup correctly.
  • Enable and disable the folder watcher during syncs correctly.
  • Fix setting of thread priority.
  • Fixed file size display.
  • Fixed various folder wizard issues
  • Made “Sync started” message optional
  • Fixed shutdown, avoid crashed config on Windows
  • Pop up config wizard if no server url is configured
  • Settings: calculate sidebar width dynamically
  • Fixed a crash if sync folders were removed
  • Do proper resync after network disconnect
  • Allow to sign in and out
  • Ask for password if missing
  • Introduce activity view
  • Introduce black list for files which could not be synced
  • Numerous fixes and code cleanup

We recommend updating to the lastest desktop sync client.  If you have any questions about these upgrades, please contact us at 256-547-6817 or support@internetpro.net.

NetSol Cloud Sync Client Updated

NetSol Cloud Client 1.4

 *Get the new client HERE.

occ14_contextmenuAll important information is now available in the context menu.

Previous versions of the NetSol Cloud client were quite sparse in terms of feedback. You would have to wait for a complete sync to finish in order to receive your results, and to understand what the client actually did, you would have to resort to running with the --logwindow option. No more! The new version features feedback about the current sync progress and already processed items in the context menu. If this is not enough, you can choose Details... from the Recent Changes. This will pop up a dialog that will give you the complete details about all uploaded, downloaded, deleted and moved files and directories. On top, the information will be available as it the sync happens, but only as a result afterwards like before. There is also feedback on the upload progress both in the context menu and in the account details. When there are problems with the sync like running out of quota, the system tray icon will now change to indicate a problem.

Settings

occ_14_monoicon

occ_14_defaulticonIcons going native

It’s hardly believable, but so far the Client went without a settings dialog. Under the hood, we had features piling up such as switching to native/monochrome icons, but they were only available as command line switches. Now they are all pretty check boxes. On top, there are now options to disable pop ups resulting from syncs, as well as auto-starting the Client on all o systems on a per-user basis. Auto start is now only default if an account has been successfully configured.

Refactoring for Features

occ14_accountsettings

Detailed quota and button leading to the Ignored Files Editor.

This release features the most changes in terms of lines of code since the beginning of the Client development. Code has been refactored to enable new functionality, such as bandwidth control, aforementioned quota visualization, or to allow for Custom Ignore patterns. Not only can you add new file patterns that will be ignored by the client, but you can also define them as discardable. For instance locally created meta-files such as .DS_Store (Mac) or Thumbs.db (Windows) would not be deleted which the folder was removed remotely, rendering the client incapable of removing the directory. Ignored files marked as discardable will now be removed without warning, making the sync experience a lot smoother.

occ14_networksettings

New in 1.4: Setting up bandwidth limits.

Another, still ongoing effort is the introduction of a smarter scheduler that ensures that sync runs will only be performed whenever there are changes on the server. Before, we could only detect local changes. In order to achieve this, we leverage the E-Tag, a Unique ID provided by the NetSol Cloud WebDAV server. This should result in significantly reduced CPU load and networking traffic. No more sync runs every 30 seconds. Instead, the root E-Tags on the server are being checked, and a sync run is only started if they changed. Also, we have lowered the thread priority for the actual sync run to provide a smoother experience.

We think you will really like the new features and the better performance of the new clients.  You can go to the Desktop Sync Clients Page to download the new versions.

NetSol Cloud Update

March 16, 2013 – We are proud to release a new major version of our NetSol Cloud product. The new version comes with many new features and improvements.

Latest NetSol Cloud Features

Usability – design improvements, new features NetSol Cloud significantly easier to manage and use:

  • New design: View content in a simplified and redesigned interface, with the main web navigation panel now clearly differentiated from in-app navigations. Settings and log-out are combined into a single user menu — which also now shows the currently logged-in user. Settings are further simplified and app-specific settings are moved from personal settings into the appropriate apps.
  • Deleted Files: Restore accidentally deleted files and folders and manually delete sensitive files, while the system now automatically cleans up older files depending on age and used space.
  • New search engine: Find files stored by name — and now by content — with a new Lucene-based full text search engine app.
  • New antivirus: Scan uploaded files using Clam AV, preventing the potential for automated distribution of infected files. Users can choose to automatically delete, report and/or log any infected files.
  • Display name: Create display names for users and administrators, simplifying the collaborative experience. In the interface and share dialog, display names are now shown instead of the login names — easier to understand for users and can be changed by the admin. (This feature is not applicable in our personal cloud product.)
  • Rewritten photo gallery: Access and share photos with friends and family with an improved and streamlined user interface – which also includes a slideshow feature.
  • Improved contacts: Access friends, coworkers and family in an enhanced interface, with contacts now organized by groups (categories) instead of address books. The main view shows an overview of the most important fields and the amount of information adjusts automatically depending on the size of the browser window or device. The web interface is now written entirely in JavaScript – resulting in a more responsive user experience.
  • Improved calendar: Mark events as confidential or public easily with a simplified user interface that gives users more control — including support for classes.
  • Improved bookmarks: Create, find and use bookmarks faster with filter navigation, a “read later” button for the browser toolbar, and many more enhancements that make getting to bookmarked content faster and easier.

Performance – enhanced scaling, better storage management, improved code security :

  • Improved file cache: Mix and match storage to create a hybrid cloud to take advantage of the newly refactored file system abstraction, including more flexibility and greater performance (up to 500% faster). Optional externally mounted file systems like Google Drive, Dropbox, FTP and others are scanned on-demand and in the background to increase performance. Support for SFTP external file systems is added.
  • Improved syncing of Desktop Client: Sync faster with dramatically improved sync performance between the desktop clients due to significantly reduced server overhead communications.
  • Security: Reduce the risk of harmful actions with updated app-level protection via CSRF protection checks, and forbidden inline JavaScript (XSS protection).
  • Improved versioning: Automatically manage versions on the server, expiring old versions when users run out of quota. A new intelligent algorithm keeps revisions every 2 seconds for the first 10 seconds, every 10 seconds for the next minute, every minute for the next hour, every hour for the next 24 hours, and one revision per day until running out of space or quota.

Other usability and performance improvements:

  • Faster and more compatible web-based PDF Viewer
  • Improved media player for listening to streaming media files
  • New file size and progress bars at work during downloads
  • Improved overall performance

We hope everyone will enjoy the new enhancements to NetSol Cloud.  We will continue to update this product in the future as cloud storage becomes a larger and more fundamental use for the internet.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at support@internetpro.net.
